Saved by the Sawiri family
In 2005, the Egyptian visionary and billionaire Samih Sawiri visited the Urseren Valley and saw Andermatt’s potential. He wanted to awaken the village from its slumber by updating the ski area and building more hotels and flats, thus creating many new jobs. His ambition to make Andermatt a tourist destination was well on its way to becoming a reality. In 2009 a groundbreaking ceremony for the Chedi Andermatt hotel was held. It was to be built on the same site as the legendary Grand Hotel Bellevue once stood.
SNOW PARADISE
Snowy Andermatt
Andermatt is located a full 1444 metres above sea level and is known for having the most snowfall in all of Switzerland. Due to its high altitude, the village receives snow from all four directions. Many visitors are affected by the altitude, and some become giddy or dizzy. Still, that does little to dissuade the world’s freeride enthusiasts. Andermatt is a mecca for off-piste skiers on the hunt for their next shot of adrenaline; the surrounding area has over 100 gorgeous, piste-free slopes. The summit of Gemsstock Mountain is a great favourite among many visitors looking for a world-class ski experience.
