SICILIAN CERAMICS

Every Creation Tells a Story

Each unique Sicilian Moor’s Head is more than just a piece of ceramic – it tells a story of Sicily’s rich culture and artistic heritage. These masterpieces are created by dedicated master ceramicists who transform clay into captivating works of art. A Testa di Moro is more than a decorative object; it embodies the passion and traditions of Sicily.

During the Moorish rule of Sicily, around the year 1000, a beautiful young woman lived in Palermo. She spent her days tending lovingly to the plants on her lush balcony when, one day, she caught the eye of a young Moor who instantly fell in love with her. Despite his passion, he carried a painful secret: his family was waiting for him in the East. Feeling betrayed by the man she believed to be her great love, she killed him and cut off his head so that her beloved would remain with her forever. She turned his head into a vase, planted basil in it and tended to it with devotion. To this day, the vase symbolises the eternal presence of their tragic love story.

Testa di Moro in The White Lotus

Testa di Moro was a recurring motif in The White Lotus, with the legend perfectly echoing the series’ themes of love, desire and betrayal. Today, these colourful and vibrant vases adorn pillars, shops and walls throughout Sicily, while their gruesome origins have largely faded from memory. At San Domenico Palace, Testa di Moro pieces hold a prominent place and are one of the many ways in which the hotel celebrates Sicilian culture. Far from being mere props during filming, these vases are an integral part of the hotel’s décor.
