Product information

German biologist, naturalist, and artist Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) devoted his life to exploring and documenting the astonishing diversity of the natural world, from the highest mountaintops to the depths of the ocean. A passionate supporter of Darwin’s theory of evolution, Haeckel combined scientific research with exceptional artistic talent, creating hundreds of detailed drawings, watercolors, and sketches to document and explain his discoveries.

Haeckel’s illustrations are remarkable for their extraordinary precision, symmetry, and intricate detail. From jellyfish and sea anemones to bats, lizards, and lichens, his work reveals the beauty and underlying order found throughout the natural world. His celebrated Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature) became one of the defining achievements of his lifelong ambition to unite scientific discovery with visual understanding.

This richly illustrated volume brings together 450 of Haeckel’s finest works from some of his most important publications, including Die Radiolarien, Monographie der Medusen, Die Kalkschwämme, and Kunstformen der Natur. Blending science and art in spectacular fashion, the book showcases the remarkable forms, structures, and diversity of life while offering a timely reminder of the precious biodiversity of our planet.
